Viewing Petaling Jaya from an open rooftop some 30-something stories above 1 Utama and its surrounding districts, is quite an awesome experience. Nestled on top of the One Avenue Building, Stratosphere at the Roof is an open air, functional helipad, converted into a stunning evening bar with wide views of PJ, and the wider KL landscape too. With a mild breeze up there, it is easy to forget that we are still in tropical KL; rather a sense of Cameron or Genting comes to mind, and the cool air is certainly appreciated. Covered in grass, with cobblestone pathways to guide customers to its many comfy sofas and occasional tables, Stratopsphere’s ambiance is minimalist-chic. Impressive sound system. Spectacular views; great rooftop ambience; classy yet casual feel.

Planning Traditional, Religious Ceremony and Registration of Marriage

Getting married can be as easy as filling out some forms, paying a small sum of money and signing some papers. However most people would prefer to hold religious/ traditional ceremonies to commemorate their matrimony. The celebration will be more memorable. It could be fun and tedious at the same time.

Malay Wedding and Islamic Marriage

There can be many things to do in a Traditional Malay wedding. Some of the steps are omitted or combined depending on the arrangement of both sides (man/ girl and their family) taking into consideration time, cost, requirements and practicality.

Merisik (Visit and observe) - This custom is practiced to observe or see. The man's parents or representatives pay a visit to the girl's house, ensure that the girl is eligible for marriage, as well as to get to know her - what does she do, does she know how to cook, etc. It's also an opportunity for the girl's family to find out about the man. Normally this step is skipped because in this day and age they would already know each other well enough before deciding to tie the knot.

Meminang (Proposal) - The male side sends a propose delegation consists of immediate family members to propose and ask the girl's parents for her hand in marriage.

Bertunang (Engagement) - Barangan hantaran (gifts) consisting of a ring, clothing, food... will be given to the future wife. The ring is put on the girl's finger as a symbol of engagement. Both families will discuss about the akad nikah/ wedding ceremony, wedding gifts, amount of money for the girl (mas kahwin)... A small feast will be held usually at the bride-to-be's home.

Islamic Pre-wedding Preparation and Marriage Application (see below)

Adat Berinai - The bride and groom will have henna applied on their hands the day before akad nikah.

Akad Nikah (Ijab & Kabul/ Offer & Acceptance) - Enactment of the contract to make the marriage valid according to Islam. The groom sits facing the wali (father of bride)/ the imam. They hold hands in handshake manner. The imam will say the words as to offer the bride in marriage and the groom replies to accept the offer. He prays and advices the couple. Marriage contract is signed and the man provides mas kahwin (gift money) to the bride.

Bersanding (Enthronement) - Starts with the groom's procession of friends, relatives, musicians (kompang band), carrying 7 or 9 trays of hantaran (gifts) and people waving bunga manggar (palm blossom) to meet the bride. The couple will sit on a pelamin (dais) where family members, relatives and guests sprinkle yellow rice and scented water on them for blessing. Each guest will receive a bunga telur (hard boiled egg decorated with artificial flower), as a symbol of fertility.

Practical, Simple, Cost Effective Wedding Decoration Ideas

You want to add a special touch to your wedding ceremony or reception but don't have the budget to splurge on hiring a wedding planner or any expensive decorators. Here are some of the things you could do. Sometimes placing a tree with hanging pomanders like the one below is all you need. It is big enough to demand attention, it functions as decoration, wishing tree for your guests to leave their well wishes and a great backdrop for photography. How to make pomanders - DIY Instructions here.

With enough planning, you can have both beauty and practicality at the same time. Desserts such as cup cakes, biscotti, fondue fountain, lollies, puffs can be an eye candy too. Try thinking about the theme color to make the dessert spread more presentable. Just remember to make sure that if the containers have covers, they are easy to open. Nicely wrapped or labelled wedding favors can be arranged creatively; in a wooden bowl/ boxes with dried flowers for a rustic feel, display like a gourmet stall, on trays of different heights etc.

Here are some photobooth backdrop ideas. Growing up in a multicultural community I am sure you have seen the pelamin (Malay weddings) or a mandap (for Indian weddings) where the bride and groom sit on a couch or chair during the wedding ceremony. Now how about using this concept for your photo-booth decor. A white couch embellished with drapes, paper wheels, flower garland, ribbon... it'll look stunning.

Wedding Reception at Sin Choi Wah Restaurant (翠华楼)

Updated Dec 2014
I have gotten a few email requests for a research review of Sin Choi Wah restaurant in Bandar Menjalara Kepong. It had quite a reputation for its good food in big serving. However it has been receiving mixed reviews of late regarding the food. Be impressed by the restaurant's 3-storey big structure. There are ballrooms and halls of different sizes suitable for private weddings. Also for that reason more than one weddings can be held at the spacious location. Guests could get lost there. Arranging the signage in both English and Chinese would provide a better direction for your guests who are from various educational backgrounds to locate your reception (if you were to book this venue). | May 2013

Projection of the to-be-weds' names
Brides were mostly very pleased with the quality of food and the banquet hall's ambiance. However the service rendered by the PIC was in question. The restaurant does not put the groom and bride's names up the back of the stage as it is not in the list of services provided, is that true? Alternatively you can display the couples names using a software projection similar to how Desmond and Tabby did it above. You may also need to fork out extra cash for some personalized decorations and setup.

You can expect good quality sound system, if you plan to have a live band play on your wedding day. I have heard several people saying they have live band quality system. Parking is not an issue.

May 2014
The ambience is very sophisticated dining experience. In fact, there were 3 wedding lunches today. The sound system is also quite good here. Some of the dishes taste fantastic. The scallop with celery was so tasty. The steamed sea grouper with soy sauce is just so-so. The flesh is too hard. The winner - the braised mix vegetables. The gravy is very thick and tasty.
Jan 2014
Wedding dinner. Food sucks. Portion is very small. Presentation wise looks very cheap. Food served way too slow too. 2 more to go at 11pm

Dec 2013
Wedding dinner. The shark fin soup and fried rice is too salty.

May 2013
Bad food. Scallop too soft, pork more skin & fats than meat, fish is rubbery, glutinous rice is too dry. I ain't having my wedding here!
Oct 2012
I recently attended a wedding at Sin Choi Wah and the food was great.
Sep 2012
I was there for my colleague's wedding. This is a huge place and they have rooms of different sizes suitable for small intimate or big grand weddings. Food is fantastic. The service is pretty standardized what you can get from a Chinese restaurant.
Jul 2012
Wedding dinner in Sinchoiwah Restaurant in Menjalara, Kepong. My expectation wasn’t so high as I had eaten here a few times. I only liked the Roast Chicken. The other dishes were average and not memorable. Unfortunately the management have chosen to use plastic/melamine tablewares as opposed to porcelain ones which are more classy. However, the setting of the restaurant is really nice, and it’s quite a new building. Parking is convenient and free, thanks to Tesco located opposite the restaurant.
May 2011
The whole big building belongs to the restaurant itself? I’m impressed. Normally I don’t get the opportunity to dine as such BIG place. There were several weddings being held at the same time. Everything (from the directions and wedded couples’ name) was in Chinese, but fortunately enough – I recognize the faces on the wedding photo and that led me to their wedding hall. The Steamed Pomfret Fish with Soya Sauce. The fish meat is delicate – mixing it with the sauce creates a luscious taste.
