The "E" (Edmund Tham) Gallery

Revealing that his inspiration comes from everyday life and advertisement concepts, during an interview with Wedding Guide Asia (, Edmund Tham has made it his vision to boost Malaysian photography to greater heights. The photos are so unique, beautiful and artistic after being processed by him. Upon scrutinizing his portfolio, I would describe Edmund as dedicated and seasoned. He makes sure every detail is at its best form by executing it himself. Interestingly he creates good quality wedding videos too. They are not too draggy with too many unnecessary scenes, the colors, aesthetic arrangement and the flow of the movies are built together pleasantly. In every assignment, Edmund felt for the couple in love. With the experience accumulated through his enthusiasm he soars in capturing every emotion artistically.

Thistle Johor Bahru Hotel

Thistle JB Hotel's brand-new Orchid Ballroom seats up to 1,000 guests for a wedding banquet, or 600 for an evening reception. This elegant room has no pillars, adding to the sense of space and grandeur. With a modern interior design, reception area and high ceiling, this is the perfect wedding venue to begin your journey of a lifetime. You can also include the poolside area, Thistle Club and Arondina's Outdoor Terrace in your plans.

Chinoise is their wedding and special event state and it can be transformed into a grand theatre of exquisite Chinese cuisine to suit the occasion you wish to celebrate. The hotel's Master Chef and his team of culinary artists are adept at conjuring up an array of sumptuous traditional Cantonese and Szechuan favourites.

Thistle Johor Bahru has shown superior quality in term of presentation and delivering what was promised. Kudos especially to the event co-ordinators (Nor Pasma & Norlida) as well as the banquet team (Zul, Adzmi, Sharizal & Ariy). The early meetings, food sampling for 10 guests, final meeting before the event, and the big day itself; are very well-planned and conducted systematically and professionally. The Grilled Chicken with Hoi Sin Sauce and Individual Wrapped Glutinous Rice was marvelous! Their Chef is flexible enough to allow the customer change the cooking methods from the standard menu. The banquet team has done a great job in arranging the tables, good team works & very friendly services provided to all the guests. The overall decoration is gorgeous & the bridal room is super luxurious, decorated with flower petal. The Sales Team can be hard to deal with though.

I had a splendid and brilliant wedding reception experience here on 05/04/2014 ! I'm from Penang, and I chose Thistle Johor Bahru as my wedding venue after carefully shortlisting a few other venues in Johor Bahru (most of my relatives are from Johor & Singapore). It was a night event held at the Orchid Ballroom, with a total number of 400 guests. Even though the distance from my home does not allow me to travel frequently there, the preparations went along smoothly with the in-house event coordinators. The early meetings, food sampling for 10 guests, final meeting before the event, and the big day itself; are very well-planned and conducted systematically and professionally as per my expectations. I spent 3 nights here for my event, 1 night in a deluxe sea view room and the remaining 2 nights with my wife in the bridal suite (superb room with an open air balcony of a breathless view of Straits of Johor/Singapore, you should really try it out to see what I'm talking about) and I love the warm courtesy shown and the atmosphere of the hotel throughout my stay. The day of the event was thrilling for me, in which I took part on some of the final preparations and rehearsals. The wedding itself was simply a blissful night to remember, which my family had a nice bonding time with each other. It was during this time that Thistle Johor Bahru has shown its upmost superior quality of excellence in term of presentation and delivering what was promised. Kudos especially to the event co-ordinators (Nor Pasma & Norlida) as well as the banquet team (Zul, Adzmi, Sharizal & Ariy) and all of Thistle Johor Bahru employees that I came across during my stay, your expertise and courtesy really made my wedding an event of a lifetime!

My wedding at Thistle Hotel JB last weekend was a blast! I would like to thank you and your team, especially Ms Pasma for making my wedding banquet such a memorable event to my guests. Although there were some hiccups initially from the previous staff but your new staff Pasma were very attentive to our many demanding requests. I'm apologetic that despite Pasma's brother wedding was on the same day as us, she came back to work in the evening and assisted us until the banquet ends in midnight. I'm truly impressed by the professional services rendered to us. Initially i was indecisive to consider Thistle Hotel compared to Renaissance Hotel and Traders Hotel. But now seriously i have no regrets as i received quite a no. of compliments from my guests that the Grilled Chicken with Hoi Sin Sauce and Individual Wrapped Glutinous Rice was marvellous! I must also thanks the Master Chef for being flexible to allow us to change the cooking methods from the standard menu. Last words to all couples ~ Look no further if you wish to hold your wedding in Johor Bahru!

In a nutshell, I was a customer who was already sold on the Thistle brand. All I required was for Sales to provide me with the necessary information and to take my deposit to book the ballroom. Yet, the Sales Team lied to me, treated me with utter rudeness, and contrived to make such a big mess of the situation that I almost went elsewhere for my wedding arrangements. However, luckily Thistle’s operations department, led by Adzura managed to salvage the situation and made the event a success. In total, I met up personally with Adzura only 3 times, but achieved so much more than my 4 meetings with Sales. My advice is to only hold your wedding in Thistle if you have the patience to deal with their Sales Team!

Wedding Food ala Indian

I told myself to research on some Indian food terms so when I visit an Indian restaurant next time I would be a tad more acquainted with the dish names. Started with wedding menus of course. I have learned that karahi means cooking pot, varural is dry curry and ghobi is cauliflower. If I were to create a cauliflower dish cooked with dry curry served in a pot, the name will be Ghobi Varural Karahi. LOL. I believe I have only covered a few percent of all the dishes nonetheless it is a good start. Malaysian Indian wedding food has been localized to some extent and you can find some fusion of Malay, Chinese and Western flavors in the menu.

Indian weddings are extravagant; with events happening for the entire week sometimes. With that said, the food served is also abundant. The families of the groom and bride will select the best restaurant to manage the fare to be consumed by their guests. I have been to weddings in Malaysia where the hosts engaged caterer and event planners to organize buffet meals, and the infrastructure including decorations as well. The foodie is usually a combination of vege and non-vege dishes. If you want to suggest more, feel free!

Vegetarian Options

  • Butter Paneer Masala - Paneer (fresh cheese cubes) cooked with onion, tomato, mixed spices and butter. It's a North Indian dish.
  • Aloo Ghobi - A dry dish made with potatoes (aloo), cauliflower (gobhi), tumeric, garlic, ginger, cumin and other Indian spices.
  • Basmati Briyani (Biryani) - Basmati rice and vegetables are used to cook this aromatic rice dish together with dried fruits, yogurt, ghee, and other spices. You can also add the meat of your choice.
  • Kofta Curry - Koftas are meatballs formed by grinding meat (such as lamb) with coriander, garlic, onions, turmeric, cumin, cardamom, or nutmeg. The vegetarian variation of kofta can be made by cabbage, carrot, capsicum, broccoli held together with cornflour to form a ball. The kofta is fried and cooked in curry.

Absolutely non-Vege

  • Mutton Dalcha is mutton braised with lentil (chana dal) gravy and curry. To add more color,  vegetables like carrot, brinjal, potato can be mixed in as well.
  • Chicken Tikka Masala - Bite-size pieces (tikka) of boneless chicken grilled using skewers then cooked in rich buttery masala sauce. Masala is often described as a mixture of dried spices and chilli paste.
  • Fish Karahi Masala - Fish cooked in karahi (deep, round cooking pot) with a combination of spices and vege such as capsicum.
  • Chicken Varuval - Chicken cooked in dry curry (varural).

Sweet Treat
  • Payasam - A dessert made by boiling rice, milk and sugar, flavored with raisins and nuts.
  • Kulfi Ice Cream - Dairy dessert that is very similar to ice cream but is denser and creamier.
  • Gulab Jamun is a popular Indian dessert made of fried dough soaked in sugar syrup.
